Academic Ranking of World Universities - 2007
A global university ranking system is presented by Professor Nian Cai LIU et al. of the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The group ranks universities by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, articles published in Nature and Science, articles indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution. http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2007/ranking2007.htm

Tapping the sun
"More energy in the form of sunlight strikes Earth in one hour than all of the energy consumed by humans in an entire year." This staggering statistic is a good reason to re-focus on solar energy. ACS publicationÕs C&En devotes its cover story to: Òbasic chemistry drives development of new low-cost solar cells.

Bisphenol A safety uncertainty
A clutch of papers raising concerns about the health effects and environmental impact of bisphenol A are discussed this week in the American Chemical Society magazine C&EN. The magazine reports that low levels of human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a compound widely used in the manufacture of polycarbonate and epoxy resins, could have adverse health affects. Four toxicology studies demonstrate health effects as diverse as increased rates of breast and prostate cancer, reproductive abnormalities, obesity, and insulin-dependent diabetes. The magazines also reports that, despite growing evidence of toxic effects in laboratory animals, manufacturers of BPA say the product is safe. In stark contrast with the papers highlighted in the article, C&EN also reports that the European Food Safety Authority stated recently that there are no adverse effects of BPA.
